The current state of Tory politics was ably summarised by John Warren in a comment on this blog yesterday:
It is quite outrageous how badly people like Cameron, Johnson, Patel, Mogg and the rest of the Conservative leadership have reduced the discourse of politics to meaningless banality, where nothing means anything at all; a perpetually recycled box of stock sound-bites and slogans; shuffled and re-booted to fit the passing moment's needs or convenient glib evasion, before moving on to the next event, safe in the security that every single word is so empty, so pointless, so bereft of substance, nobody will remember any of it by the time of the next newscast – or care.
There is very little that can be added to that except to note that not only are the Tories running a corrupt government, they are also corrupting politics itself.

Therefore we have reached a form of stability then – that’s the only conclusion you can come to – a comfort zone has been reached whereby Government and the people have reached some form of agreement or detente to ignore each other.
Them – because they are rich and so distanced from reality.
Us – because we live in their chaos and lies and are too concerned with our day to day survival.
What will be the tipping point I wonder? I confess that I have no idea.
The state of politics today is pretty dire across the piece. Where is the vision?
Interesting that he adds Cameron, who I suspect is not particularly supportive of current prime minister, but not Theresa “Brexit means Brexit” May.
Oh sorry, now I see the context, which was Cameron retrospectively reanalysing how tough his government was (or rather was not) on Russia, so that makes a bit more sense. Seemed a bit odd to refer to him alongside Patel, Mogg, etc, when he has been out of government for nearly six years now.
If the newspapers had honest journalism, willing to challenge distortions, omissions and selective reporting, they would find it hard to get away with it.
The press is, largely, owned by people who want the end you describe. They dictate what we read. This is why blogs like this one are vital.
These Tories don’t care because when you only need to keep about a third of voters happy, mainly in key FPTP seats around the country (that country being Middle England) then the most perfect elected dictatorship has been produced. In just about any proportional voting system this Tory Party would be reduced to the fringes of politics, in part because they have no friends other than extremists like the DUP and opportunists like Farage. They’ve used and stabbed everyone else in the back, including many of their own. The electoral corruption of FPTP is all they have got left to cling on to power. The Tories have perfected the art of I’m alright Jack politics.
This is the reason they are driving the “All politicians are corrupt” narrative.
They know that public disaffection with politics serves to keep them in power, because there is a hard core who will always vote Tory.
