I’m afraid people ultimately vote for leaders rather than policies. And as the Tories have ruthlessly exposed, while Gordon Brown is happy to comment on all manner of popular trivia, when a big issue comes around he goes missing. When Blair was in charge Brown spent 4 or 5 years avoiding telling us whether he approved of the Iraq war. Now he won’t even tell us whether he thinks a man convicted by a Scottish court of murdering 270 people should have been released for reasons of “compassion”, because no doubt to do so would offend his good friend the Colonel.
What it does show is that, regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum, if you are seen as being without courage or conviction, you will not get elected.
You never know, perhaps GB doesn’t see anything wrong with compassion or even believes (knows even) that Megrahi is innocent. It would be difficult for him to confess to either of these opinions.
