The US Senate voted on the Green New Deal yesterday.
All 53 Republicans voted to oppose the Green New Deal.
So did four Democrats.
That's like voting for extinction.
But it does draw lines in the sand that will make choices for young people at future elections in the US easy to identify.
I'm hoping the only actual extinction will be of the Republicans.

It’s actually worse than you point out. The proposal received precisely Zero votes in favour, with 43 of the Democrats merely voting ‘present’, rather than for or against. This is a terrible indication of the likelihood of adoption of the NGD in the US going forward.
I find the Democrats’ cop out even more distasteful than the Republicans’ rejection if I’m honest.

Like a breath of fresh air.
After watching David Lammy giving the few who turned up in Parliament both barrels in his superb speech of January this year, it is good to see another BME politician tackle issues in this most un-Anglo Saxon of ways.
I’ve seen this sort of AOC thing happen in Congress though – about the bank bailout in 2008 – but no one seems to listen – very politely of course.
An American comic described American politics as the Republicans being the party of bad ideas, and the Democrats being the party of no ideas, with the latter only managing to make the former’s ideas ‘shittier’.
American politics is totally messed up and seems to have stopped functioning as designed. If the Pilgrim Fathers came back to their land, I’m sure they would feel the same and emigrate once again to find that mythical nation on the hill somewhere else.
Their problem? I think its the classic liberal conundrum – this inability to bring decent ideas about fairness beyond a personal stand point into collective ownership. The gulf between personal freedom and (for want of a better phrase) collective freedom cannot be bridged in a hyper-individualised world and this problem is turbo charged.
But you never know – AOC maybe the one to help kick the door in, but if you think we are a divided nation – the Americans have been living like this for years.

It certainly is cold comfort to watch the American polity f**king-up big time. Because our lot this side of the pond both here in the UK and in the wider European arena are playing precisely the same ‘game’ to the same rather stoopid rules.
You might find it encouraging to watch this. We’re not dead yet. And while there’s life there’s hope.
