I wonder if I could ask for some advice? I have been doing some exploration of alternative blogging software for the Mac and iPad.
Blogging from a Mac on WordPress has become very unreliable: for a long time I never lost a draft post, but recently I have, several times. That means alternative software that can be used offline and save drafts locally is needed. I do not have time to waste that way. So, what would people recommend?
The WordPress app on the iPad has always been dire. I use Blogsy but it's a bit cumbersome. Are there any other suggestions for the iPad?
All comments from those using such software would be appreciated. Thanks, in anticipation.
PS This was written on Desk, which I am not yet sure about.
Thanks for reading this post.
You can share this post on social media of your choice by clicking these icons:
You can subscribe to this blog's daily email here.
And if you would like to support this blog you can, here:
You can email WordPress posts to an address linked to your blog. This feature even allows inclusion of media and categorization of posts. http://codex.wordpress.org/Post_to_your_blog_using_email
That way you can use your favorite email platform, and continually save drafts there if you get paranoid, just like with emails.
I may try it – but that does not cover off line easily
Hi, one of the best ones that I am aware of is called Byword it allows you to store your draft for blogs off-line and also to write and in markdown as well if required
I am getting to the point of trying it
Thanks
Again, you can always save drafts. For instance, I do alot of correspondence via email. I save certain half-written messages as drafts in Thunderbird, and they are secure, as long as my hard drive doesn’t give out. In fact, they are secure as long as Dropbx continues to exist, since I sync my email folder within that service.
Other alternatives (if you don’t trust your own hard drive) are things like Google Docs or the Riseup Etherpad: https://pad.riseup.net/ .
Thanks
I’d take a different approach. Simply draft posts as text files and save them in a Dropbox folder on your iPad, which you’d be able to access from anywhere. You could use something like IA Writer and Markdown.

When you’re happy with the post login to your WordPress site and publish it.
This way you have your posts available on any device with an internet connection.
But I don’t think you can post direct from IA Writer?
You can from ByWord but that seems to require iCloud – and I presume that needs an internet connection?
This seemed sound advice
But I note IA Writer now defaults to saving in iCloud
I also note Byword which seems to get round all this. Have you tried it?
Thanks for your help
Richard,
Frankly, no idea. However, please choose one that can create a mobile version of the site.
No doubt Apple has something of the sort.
True mobile costs a lot – and I do not have it
Let’s have a whip around!
🙂
Richard,
I use blogger.com from my Ipad, Iphone, and Imac.
It is always on-line, but I also write my blogposts often in a Word-file when in off-line mode.
It is very simple to copy-paste them to my own website when I am online.
Thanks
Unfortunately not a solution for WordPress, but thanks
Initial conclusion is BlogPad Pro is replacing Blogsy on the iPad
Deeply unimpressed by Btword and IAWriter updates – Markdown us horrible
Desk PM looks much better now
Marsedit looks like it was created in 2001 and is ghastly to write on
Blogo update looks good
I suspect Desk PM will get used and Blogo to – each looks to have merits
Obviously you need something that doesn’t mislay comments as regularly as your current software.
Or is that a feature rather than a bug, old mate?
No, it’s the fact that as a person who writes persistently deeply offensive comments and who is a former UKI adviser the only proper treatment for your comments is delection
