The Mirror wrote a very good commentary on George Osborne's speech when accepting the GQ Magazine Politician of the Year award this week.
To describe Osborne's comments as juvenile is being kind to them. I won't repeat them: read about it here.
Yesterday we had Cameron making juvenile jokes in the Commons at a female MP's expense.
Now we have the Chancellor making stupid jokes in public.
Can we trust these people to run the country?

I am no fan of that particular female MP but the way she was treated by Cameron was disgraceful and reveals his patronising and supercillious attitude to women. I have now read the Mirror’s article on Osborne’s acceptance speech which appears to be in very bad taste. Is this what a public school education has instilled into the minds of the two most senior political officeholders in the UK? I really hoped that this type of behaviour had been consigned to the past but seemingly not.
We’ve dubbed Osborne ‘Gideon The Disconnected’ in our house – from his vague interest when he’s in the House of Commons ( Commons? heh!) to this kind of report – it goes to show the guy hasn’t a clue.
Definitely a case of who you know rather than what!

These pair are part of a super arrogant cabal who have had their own way and the silver spoon treatment all of their life and treat anyone who doesn’t come from their own social sphere with complete disdain. These “gents” have no handle on the real world and how real people live. Truly it is embarrassing to be ruled by these pair who are there for their connections and heritage rather than for any talent or ability at doing their job.
I don’t think he’s stupid, so much as alien. Insulated from and impervious to the values and norms of our society, he is as appropriate a person to put in charge as a conquistador – or a martian. He cannot penetrate or understand our interests. He can only farm or otherwise exploit us for the advantage of his own kind.

But OUR society.
HIS society has always treated the “lower” society with, at best, disdain.
The problem is that HIS society runs OUR society to reward THEIR society.
It may well be the 21st century, but some are still in the early 19th century.

May I ask please: how bad do you feel a politician must get before you start arguing that we should give politicians LESS power?
In your upcoming book The Courageous State, do you make the (realistic for the next 4-ish years, at least) assumption that Dave and George are in charge? Or do you make the (unrealistic for the time being) assumption that someone else (who???) is in charge?
