Starmer should cancel the meeting with President Herzog.
Soon after Oct 7th he was interviewed by Laura Kuennsberg and his whole explanation was that the attack was due to cultivated ‘anti-Semitism’.
No discussion of the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians or the refusal to recognise a state for them. The West Bank and Gaza compromise 22% of the state placed under the mandate. The UN partitioned the territory roughly half and half although the Israeli settlers only controlled about fifth or. Their militias took control of the 78%.
Elan Pappe-an Israeli historian now at the University of Exeter-researched IDF and British archives. He also quotes from David Ben-Gurion’s ( the first Israeli Prime Minister) diary which shows the intention to do so.
Until our media give some context, people are likely to be mislead by the media. See Telegraph and Mail for anti – Palestinian narrative and innuendo. Even the proposition that Israel is fighting on our behalf against the forces of barbarism as though the Arab world is planning to destroy Europe.
If you treat a people like s**t and give them no hope of a legitimate aspiration given to them in 1922 by the League of Nations, and later the United Nations, what do you expect?
Expressions of dismay about the Israeli bombing is not enough. If Starmer insists on a meeting he must make it clear Israel has breached international law. Without it, what do we have?
Apologies for the delay in getting to this, Ian. It has been a mighty busy day. I agree with your comment.
no need to apologise
We know how hard you work and appreciate it
Being in Glasgow, my birthplace, over the weekend, I tried to buy a National, in a Sainsbuy’s local and a small newsagent. Neither stocked it. 🙁
That’s a shame…
I don’t buy any newspapers; but I have noticed on different supermarket shelves; it is rarely stocked.
You can always easily find all the Scottish Unionist titles on the shelves, although together they scarcely produce a decent circulation, in spite of being far more widely available.
Note this: The National is owned by Newsquest Media Group. Newsquest owns The Herald, Herald on Sunday, Glasgow Times etc., but you will invariably find then easily enough.
If I was cynical I might surmise it isn’t an accident that The National is hard to find.
I fear that is true.
The National is usually absent, folded over on the bottom shelf, under a Racing Post or covered by a Daily Fail.
I see staff move it or hide it. Sometimes a store customer. Some supermarkets don’t have it. Also WH Smith or whatever it’s called these days.
Funny how half the population of more express support for Indy yet the newspapers are so pro union. Nothing to do with billionaire owners of course. Trouble is, the BBC takes its news from these rags.
I note the Guardian has been a bit right of centre recently. Not good.
Fairly sure Sainsbury never has stocked. Caused some to boycott the supermarket. I can’t be so picky. Smaller newsagents maybe don’t stock on principle, or they only have a very few ( most of us using digital now ) OR – did you mine down under other papers to find the ‘buried’ copies – a game played for over ten years now by ppl opposing indy.
If you have access to the PressReader app ( free if you have membership at a library which uses it ) then find it under UK/Region/Scotland. Hope to still be alive when Scotland is no longer viewed as a ‘region’
The online edition is key to The National, I can confirm.
The online edition is key to The National, I can confirm.
FYI: I tried to subscribe to the online edition but my credit card company could not process transaction for some “international” reason related to The National. This explanation was supplied to me by my credit card company as the why the transaction kept getting rejected and “kicked out”
I have no problem with The Guardian and The Independent credit card transactions.
Weird
Do you want me to ask?
I complained to my local Tesco as they only ever had three copies, all hidden behind other newspapers.
I was told they didn’t sell many copies.
Hardly a surprise given the above.
I very much doubt if this headline will even be shown, discussed, or repeated on M.S.M. More’s the pity.

I was surprised to discover a few months ago that my local newsagent sells Byline Times. This month’s headline story Lawless Britain? How Trumpian disruption has crossed the Atlantic.
Yesterday’s article about Gaza.
https://bylinetimes.com/2025/09/09/uk-surveillance-flights-over-gaza/
When the building in Doha was bombed with the Hamas leaders in it yesterday, there was a RAF refuelling plane tracked going round and round over Doha.
The paper is totally right, but what has become of our country? Surely there are better people to host? This is not going to look good in our history books!
Bang on, laddie.
The most reliable way of reading The National is by subscription. It’s usually quite reasonable and the content is brilliant.
Especially a Monday columnist I know 🙂
I like that dude too!!!!
We have yet another appalling action by Israel and a blindingly obvious opportunity to show disapproval by refusing Herzog’s visit, even if it’s only symbolic. Herzog has made comments as dreadful as any in that genocidal Israeli government.
If Starmer and co dont have the courage to tell Herzog to stay at home. there is no way that they will do anything serious about Israel. Now an utterly rogue state.
Gaza/Israel is for Starmer’s Labour what Iraq was for Blair. A demonstration of a total lack of morals or courage, that will damage their reputation permanently.
The Morning Star – I paper I often buy despite its being studiously ignored by the establishment media (stocked by the local Coop and by Booths) – also featured condemnation of this despicable act of cringing complicity by Starmer.
Firstly, thank you for all you do Richard to enlighten us in financial and related matters.
My comment on the current topic, is the UK hosting the Arms fair. Where Israeli companies were showcasing their killing tools, which they practise in Gaza on the Palestinians.
This should have been cancelled. The same with the visit of the Israeli President
I was also disgusted to see the Banksy artwork on the Royal Courts of Justice being erased.
To me this speaks volumes of Starmer’s Government
