If so, what are the most likely causes? Where will these problems be seen first, and in what crops, and what mitigation techniques can be used?
I am looking for a summary of around 1000 words for use on the Funding the Future blog, but to be written in summary format, suggesting it comes from ChatGPT, and not in my usual blogging style. You may, however, assume an intelligent, informed, reader who understands political economy and who wishes to appraise this data within the context of the stresses that such a crisis will give rise to.
This was the response that I got, which I have not edited in any way, except to reduce the boldness of some of the headings:

Other observation, ref South East Asia & taking the Mekong river as an example – I gave up counting Chinese dams on this river when I reached 20. Problem: sediment rentention (= delta erosion). Same for most other rivers that start in the Himalayas – China has dammed many of them & is about to start on the ..Brahmaputra. This is going to end very very badly.

Conclusion: this country needs a national water strategy from a state owned entity – and right quick! Whilst the private owners plunder income and investment pots, we cannot leave it to them.

I think overconsumption in the west also is not right when starvation is killing people. I asked chatgpt to estimate overconsumption per year in the UK, based on the overweight and obesity statistics. The figure it came up with was 410 billion excess kilocalories per year or 53 million kg of fat storage per year. Equivalent to roughly 700 million big macs.
Combine overconsumption with food waste figures and the result is pretty depressing. If we could undo our western decadence and solve the logistical problems of distributing food, a lot of people would not unnecessarily die.

This has all been predicted for many, many years and yet we don’t seem to be able to act globally to distribute resources fairly. What would it take? Possibly the only solution is a draconian world wide government that ruthlessly enforces an agreed standard of living for all humans. This would mean a considerable worsening of conditions for the citizens of the wealthier nations and no free choice. I can’t see that happening because human nature won’t let it, we still operate at a tribal level and therefore we will be our own nemesis. That sounds very pessimistic doesn’t it? And yet I am happy because I have a baby grandchild and am going on holiday next week, I too am human and tribal.
This really made me stop and think. It’s scary how much famine is about human choices rather than lack of food itself.
