It seems that Labour MPs have had much the same reaction as I have had to Keir Starmer's PIP concessions:

I hope none of them stand down until the bill proposal is scrapped.
As one mp said, you can’t horse-trade on the back of the disabled.
Do that on the back of the rich if you must.
The last thing the UK needs is another generational divide, such as older disabled people getting more support than younger.
But it’s not that, is it?
A 23 year old who is getting PIP now will still get it but if his parents became disabled next year they might not.
JenW – But deliberately divisive all the same.
But disability is more likely in older people.
Someone has pointed out that PIP is only awarded for a fixed period. So if it is awarded today for 3 years, will the recipient have to re-apply (under the new rules) in 3 years’ time? In which case this ‘concession/compromise’ is a con. Like so mush this appalling government does.
It would seem so, yes.
Since coming to offer there has been this nagging question, ‘Why have Labour been so bad at reading the room?” These posts suggest a simply answer. The senior leadership have not been in the room. Not with voters. Not even their own MPs.
It’s heartening to see.
I’ve heard the rebels are calling for Reeve to step down as well. Any hopes for who would replace her?
No idea
I am not seeing a lot of talent
That looks like the SCG “usual suspects”, Starmer won’t worry about them.
The rebellion has reportedly lost all the select committee chairs – I wonder how many will get now get gov’t jobs in the upcoming reshuffle?
What I can’t see anywhere is any talk about numbers still on board with the amendment.
MPs need to hear from constituents (US) AGAIN to say that we are NOT convinced by the concessions. Even if today’s claimants aren’t affected, tomorrow’s claimants WILL be, so what has changed?
Sickening if they have all caved in
This is disgraceful but what do we expect from this LINO government.
Support for current disabled people but none for the future sick/disabled! Anyone who thinks this is acceptable is as sick in the head as those in the LINO government who are now beyond the pale when it comes to their lack of humanity.
They are hateful people and should be drummed out of office for this and other policies designed to kick people rather than support them.
Does anyone know if this “offer” to retain current benefits will really be retained and uprated annually, or “transitionally protected” and held at current rates until they match the proposed new rates?
Not because I see anything good in this, but because the hammer to beat the government could be strengthened.
Spot on Anne Cruise!!
That is exactly what they will do. Hold the amount till the others “catch up”.
Just as they have frozen the tax bands so that nearly all retired people will pay tax. With all the admin costs (both for state and individuals) that goes with it.
Joined up thinking? Bliar once talked about that, a long time ago. I think they’ve all forgotten now.
They never seem to grasp that there will be unintended consequences, invariably more expensive.
The fact that the list of those opposing this bill includes Liz Kendall’s former campaign chairman shows quite how badly No 10 have misjudged this.
Starmer and all his team really are in a mess.
Lets hope he steps down soon.
The Bill itself is despicable. It always was, it still is.
But even worse, the people who will suffer from these unnecessary cuts are now FUTURE claimants of UC Heathcare element and FUTURE claimants of PIP.
Here’s the despicable bit – right now they are fit and well. They aren’t claiming either payment. They haven’t yet suffered the health catastrophe that will mean they need extra support to do ordinary things we all take for granted.
So they aren’t yet objecting. They may not even have heard of PIP or UC, but they will, when that future health catastrophe hits them. We have to shout on their behalf.
They arent writing to their MPs because they don’t KNOW they are going to be made to pay for balancing Reeves’s nuclear accounts.
But one day, they WILL have that stroke or heart attack or car accident, and then, too late, they will learn that they may be £4000-£7000 out of pocket because Liz Kendall, Keir Starmer, Rachel Reeves and EVERY MP WHO VOTES FOR THE UC/PIP BILL on Tuesday, care more about “balancing the books” (which isn’t even necessary) than governing for the good of those in most need.
What a dirty deceitful trick! Don’t let these callous heartless greedy thugs get away with it. Another indelible bloodstain on Keir Starmer and his Labour Party.

Much to agree with
An excellent and honest explanation by Kim Johnson on why she is not being taken in by the slight changes being made. Shame on those who have been.

Thanks
Heartening to hear this! She was our MP before boundary changes, and she’s a great MP. 🙂
I caught some of Starmer’s speech to the Welsh Labour Party on Sky News this morning (incidentally held at the same venue in Llandudno we’ll be visiting in October to see Tim Peake speak – I imagine he’ll be a lot more interesting than Starmer! We saw him a New Scientist exhibition in London some years ago, he’s one of only 3 really charismatic people I’ve ever seen in my life).
