As the Guardian reported yesterday:
The US will abandon its efforts “within days” to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine unless there are clear signs a settlement can be reached, the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, has said, as Kyiv says it has signed a memorandum with the US over a controversial minerals deal.
Speaking in Paris on Friday after meeting European and Ukrainian leaders, Rubio said Donald Trump was still interested in a deal. But he added that the US president had many other priorities around the world and was willing to “move on” unless there were signs of progress.
I am old enough to remember reports like these:
It is clear that Trump uttered complete and utter nonsense.
He is now betraying Ukraine.
He is betraying the USA.
He is betraying the USA's supposed European allies.
He could not have done more to help Putin if he were trying to do so.
And still, the UK government treated him like a credible ally.
Why is that? Trump has no credibility whatsoever. And yet we continue to pretend he has. What is the reason?

Even more troubling, British and American military forces are assisting Israel with genocide. This three-nation alliance appears to have greater significance for Starmer than Ukraine, humanity, justice, common sense, war crimes or anything else.
Trump, like Biden, could have brought a halt to the slaughter in Gaza. Instead, they ramped up the supply of weapons. Bernie Sanders objected in the US Senate. He lost ( two votes ) about 82-15.
Why does Israel need thousands of 2,000 pound bombs and thousands of guidance systems to fit to dumb or unguided bombs? Gaza is only 141 square miles.
I’m afraid that the obvious answer is indeed the obvious answer…. the complete and utter eradication of Palestinians.
Keir Starmer and our government’s complicity in this can never be forgotten or forgiven. There are almost no words to describe this immoral evil.
one word is genocide. Not the literal eradication of all their lives, perhaps but a denial of their culture and identity as a people.
The aim of Likud is the annexation of the remaining Palestinian areas and probable expulsion of their people.
Might a reason/cause be that we are currently (mis)governed by a clique of people who have locked themselves in delusional political theory which cannot accommodate reality, change and that which is not included in their theory’s structure?
Trump is not a well man. He harms everyone who comes into his orbit, and now the world has been sucked in too.
It’s a real shame that people in US who had power didn’t pay more attention to the robust research on the authoritarian dynamic – Behavioural Economics. So many avoidable mistakes made, I hope we don’t repeat them.
Money. Lots of money. It’s not about Trump really – it’s taking care of the usual business.
I find it simple and also repellent.
Our economic sectors are up for sale and the U.S. wants in, like it always does.
UK politicos are addicted to inward investment but do not understand or care about the outward profit streams. They will be the caretakers of the wealth extraction to follow as they divest themselves of the commitments better governments made. And they will be rewarded – they are in on it. Everyone is making money.
As for the Ukraine I find myself overwhelmed by history and Western stupidity. It’s a European problem now and good luck with it.
I’ll start off by saying i am glad some of the responses acknowledge the slaughter now taking place in Gaza and the U.S’s contribution to this.
I genuinely believe Trump’s mental faculties are now in decline, he still seems to approach everyone as though they are contestants on ‘The Apprentice’ that he can bully on camera.
I noted Rubio’s comment that “peace may not be doable” with considerable horror. Peace is always “doable” with enough effort, compromise and humanity on the part of those in conflict.
It seems to me that Trump’s principal interest in peace in Ukraine was getting sole access to its minerals and, no that has become apparent that Zelensky has no intention of letting him have that for nothing, he has simply lost interest. Peace requires hard work and comes with real costs and Trump prefers cheating and golf.
