According to the US Congressional Budget Office:
The federal government employs about 2¼ million military personnel (of whom about 1 million are reservists) and about 2¼ million civilian personnel (of whom nearly 60 percent work for the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, and Homeland Security).
Today, the New York Times has reported in an email:
The Trump administration has offered roughly two million government employees the option to resign by Feb. 6 and keep being paid until Sept. 30, a move that could significantly reduce the federal work force.
In other words, Trump is seeking to sack around seven out of every eight Federal employees and somehow thinks that US government departments will continue to function despite doing so.
I keep saying that Trump's only agenda is to destroy government as it has been known, and increasingly, that seems to be absolutely right.
I know Musk did something like this at Twitter. But look what happened. This route is the path to mayhem, disorder and complete chaos.

It looks like the invitation has been offered to seven out of ten. The offer is eight months pay if they take up the offer. It has been made to two million -some have been exempted,
The Independent says the administration expects 10% to take up the offer. So does Sky news.
It will still be mayhem
yes indeed. I shall hear in the next day or so from American friends. But it doesn’t seem to be 7 out of 8. As Granny said, ‘we shall see.’
I think that’s the offer
By no means all will accept.
I quoted my sources.
The view is that he is trying to create chaos and normalise using the military (he claimed the military intervened to “turn on” water supplies in California, as if Newsom deliberately wants California to burn or something) in civilian matters. Cue a social uprising or revolt which is quashed by the military and provides pretext for martial law or the suspension of civil liberties. Well, anything that increases his power. They are already floating around the idea of him having a third term. We’ve all seen this before and it’s obvious what’s coming. Ultimately Trump isn’t that smart, the problem is his too-big voter base are frankly buffoons that let him get away with his obvious grift.
Trump is not that bright, but the people behind him are both smart and evil.
I don’t think he’s expecting them to continue to function. I think that’s his entire point.
The USA needs experienced Federal workers to the job of administrating the work of the country.
I thought British Cabinet minsters, on the average, were a pretty sorry lot (with all the real work done by the Civil Service) but the US has out done the UK with Robert Kennedy, Jr.
Presidential appointees like Robert Kennedy, Jr. is why the USA needs experienced Federal workers more than ever.
