I just posted this on Bluesky:
It is quite a moment to realise that the new US President is so opposed to an idea that I helped create. I am happy to be his opponent. We will prevail. The young people of this planet require that we do.

It will come eventually. Fossil fuels will run out hopefully before the planet ends up like Venus with the atmosphere and oceans evaporated. Nothing much we can do here other than keep the pressure on Starmer.
It’s not only that fossil fuels will come to an end. Renewables have been marching on because they are cheap (especially solar), China will have most likely more than 50 per cent e-cars sold this year out of the total number. The transition’s happening with or without the US.
Thank you Richard. The Green New Deal. I am with you all the way.
Sanity will prevail.

Thanks
In a democracy nobody can ban an idea. You only have to look at the bad ideas from the 20th Century that refuse to die. Your time will come again sir.
I wear my abuse from Trump and his kind as a badge of honour.
Paul Manafort, Roger Stone, Robert Mueller, the Republican party – these are some of Americans responsible for this, never mind what seems to be a Russian connection widely reported. Never mind that Trump ‘won’ an election. He did not win anything – he was given it on a plate by the aforementioned and the Democrat party who just did not take him seriously.
Why didn’t they not take him seriously?
Because the sad fact is that Trump simply used that easy lack of accountability, morals and principle that has enabled the rich political class in the U.S. to ascend to an almost monarchical, God-like status in their republic to hide himself and stoop lower than any them. And why has he stooped lower? Because the reason Trump exists at all is because it is part of another old foe’s foreign policy of having the last laugh. And all they have done is exploit the USA’s biggest weakness among its modern polity: Greed.
Yes absolutely. Having recently returned to the UK I spent the weekend with my 2 youngest grandchildren aged 9 and 4 and, after dropping them off at school this morning, took my daughter out for breakfast. The topic of conversation – parent’s responsibility to prepare their children for the world they perceive their children will be confronted with in the future. From AI to armed uprising in Europe, from a green sustainable economy to a totalitarian dystopian feudal world ruled by trillionaire megalomaniacs. I’m happy to report that she still has faith that the current state of affairs will be seen by future generations as just a blip in the development of the human race. Like a snake shedding its old skin to allow for further growth and to remove parasites that may have attached to their old skin.
I think I still have that belief. But yesterday was grim.
By ending the Green New Deal and other climate change policies Trump is consigning the USA to a decade or more of falling further behind the rest of the world in the technology of the future. Any short term gain will be lost as the best brains in these technologies move to countries who value their research.
It will be essential that the rest of the world take up the challenge of tackling climate change with even more vigour. If Trumps aim is to stop China from pulling ahead of the USA, this is his biggest mistake.
That’s a good point. Whilst the ruling regime in China is a deeply unpleasant dictatorship, at least the CCP recognises the immense threat of climate change and is leading in the production and deployment of green technologies.
And as I understand it, are making efforts to reduce the use of coal. The contrast with the morons in the USA is startling.
