We went on a walk around Ely this morning, noticing just how quiet it was.
Down at the river was this chap:
He definitely should not be in Ely right now. That is a white-faced whistling duck. It should be in sub-Saharan Africa or South America.
I am quite sure it did not get here of its own accord. I strongly suspect it has escaped from a collection.
The good news is that it was very obviously getting along with its neighbours just fine, and has worked out exactly where to be to get fed on the river.
I rather like that, and so long as it has learned of the dangers of both cats and foxes it might do just fine for a while. There is room at the inn on the river for this one.

Season’s Greetings Richard
Lots of nice walks to enjoy and a trip to salt marsh is good for birding
Indeed
Happy Christmas
and yesterday I was having a ‘cuppa’ with friends at a farm on Lathkil Dale, when came swoop after swoop of starling murmuration – dipping briefly onto local fields, but always within sight – sometimes breaking into several smaller groups but still in murmuration (or several) and then reforming into one huge acrobatic display. Such simple pleasures must be enjoyed whenever possible.
Brilliant
How to use a sovereign fiat currency. China knows more about MMT and how to use it. Nothing to do with politics or ideology. MMT exists by definition alone.
“China to ramp up fiscal support for consumption next year”. BEIJING, Dec 24 (Reuters) – China will ramp up fiscal support for consumption next year by raising pensions and medical insurance subsidies for residents as well as expanding consumer goods trade-ins, its finance ministry said on Tuesday.
The country will boost the basic pension for retirees and for urban and rural residents and raise financial subsidy standards for urban and rural residents’ medical insurance to help “vigorously” boost consumption, the ministry said after concluding a two-day national fiscal work conference.
OK, China is run like a giant western corporation, with a Chief Executive that kicks arse. Not for it, electing know-nothing amateur politicians and making them Chief Finance Officer of a multi-billion Pound government corporation.
Very nice Richard. Looks like he’ll be having a Merry Christmas.
I hope you and all other contributors to this blog do too.
And to you
Did he miss his flight? I never visited Ely, however it sounds a lot cheaper than a visit then the other two destinations. I enjoy these threads, until they built houses I often visited the geese locally, now it’s a trek from the bus stop & quite the lonesome activity when on bike. Alas, I can live vicariously. Seasons Greetings!
And to you
And miss the flight? No. He was, I suspect, bred here. Of course he does not count in the formal sense as a bird seen as the birding authorities count them, but he is, nonetheless, a bird seen, and I like him.
The “Down at the River” chap is just adorable.

To All: Have a wonderful holiday.
