Trump has lost his first nominated candidate for membership in the government that will take office with him on January 20 2025. Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his name from consideration for the office of attorney general, largely because of the scandals surrounding his conduct on which Congress was about to report when he resigned from that House to accept this nomination.
Trump must have known of those scandals and thought them unimportant.
We are aware that at least one other nominee faces serious charges of misconduct.
Trump is delivering what we expected. It is very clear that he does not care about compliance with the law or ethics.
The media has accounted for Gaetz. Maybe they will still hold Trump accountable, to some degree. But it is not going to be easy. The US is still in for a very rough ride.

A kakistocracy is in the making no matter who gets excluded!
The really weird thing is that when you look at his picks for cabinet posts, he seems to have an attraction to sexual predators.
Gaetz is not the only one with a twisted history.
Textbook. Unfortunately I learned the hard way from my personal experience of VIP sexual predators that they always succeed in evading justice because they never hunt alone. There is always a supporting network of complicit, loyal colleagues, friends and family as well as an inner ‘adult’ well placed private group of men and women best understood as a knowing wolf pack who constantly have each other’s backs.
Accountability seems non-existent.If things appear chaotic,it’s seen by the Trump people as a fault of the media because of how it’s been reported.And it things are going well,the same people find something else to focus on and blame.Exhausting in the extreme,if you let it get to you.
It means that Matt Gaetz has lost his congressional seat. And that means the ethics committee report is not released. So much for accountability.
Not really.
Matt Gatez resigned his current seat in the USA House of Representatives, however, he was reelected to that same seat for the 2026 Congressional Session. Matt Gatez can take that seat if he chooses to so in the 118th Congress.
Word on the radio is that Matt Gatez wants to run for Governor of Florida as Ron “DeSatan” DeSantis is term limited out.
That would be grim for Florida

Intermitently we hear a lot (relatively) about the goings on in Florida;: Book burning (or do I mean banning?) and the like, but is it really that extreme, and if it is is it an outlier? Are there other states similarly rabid in their right wing fervour? Clearly not all states because the US has a bit of everything – is a continent after all, not merely a country.
@Andrew (Andy) Crow
The simple, and I say simple, answer to your question is NO! It is really NOT that extreme. There is a really small but very loud minority of Evangelical Nationalist Protestant Christians that will say and do ANYTHING to get any media attention possible.
FLORIDA IS NOT A SOUTHERN STATE!
What one must understand is that Florida is really four States with 25% of the population over the age of 60 years. The over 60+ people are concentrated in the suburban areas or what you might call the Market Towns (St. Petersburg, Bradenton, The Villages, Fort Myers, Naples, Port Charlotte…etc…etc…) These Market Towns are basically “resort” living communities with a service economy based on serving the permanent and semi permanent (snowbirds) residents. As Florida has NO state income tax, all these people care about is their property tax rate and the real estate value of said property that they own. These people are not burning books because they did not bring any books with them when they retired to Florida.
The second State of Florida are the Urban Centers, Tampa, Orlando, and Miami-Dade. Up until the last election these urban areas voted progressive and to the left in national elections. Biden and Obama won all these areas nationally. These urban areas still continue to vote progressive and to the left in state and local elections. These people care about everything as the demographics very much mirror that of Atlanta, Georgia aka The Empire City of the South. Not only are these people are not burning books they are demanding that local governments fully fund more satellite public libraries.
The third State of Florida is the Panhandle of Florida, including Jacksonville. This is the last remnant of the “Old South” in Florida is is basically and extension of south Georgia and south Alabama. The smell and accompanying odor of White Privilege is present and very heavy. These people would attend a book burning and disdain Martin Luther King, Oprah Winfrey and Reverend Al Sharpton.
The fourth is basically the north to south center of the state (but not Orlando) where all the large corporate farming takes place. There is a large both legal and non-legal immigrant population present. These people are not burning books and would not bother spending the time unless the ashes could be used as fertilize.
The biggest problem in Florida is the misconception of immigration. Unhappy people in Florida blame Mexico when in reality most Florida immigrants are from South America (Venezuela) and the Caribbean (Haiti, Cuba, Dominican Republic). Unhappy people resent the amount of government money spent on immigrants and refugees. Unhappy people also resent going into a burger joint (McDonalds. Burger King, Wendy’s) are the person taking their order not speaking fluent English or understanding English on the first go-around of ordering. These people are not burning books, they are emailing the corporate fast-food headquarters with their complaints hoping to get a voucher for a free mail.
What I find really interesting is that, in Florida, their is almost no discrimination against people from Southeast Asia (Viet Nam), India and Eastern Europe. Maybe it is because these people are considered ‘white”.
All the “book burning” stuff is just from a very loud minority. Florida is a referendum state so please note that on the last election ballot, the referendum to enshrine abortions right in the state constitution receive 58.6% of the vote. This vote was only 1.4% short making the right to an abortion enshrined in the state constitution. I have no doubt it will reach the 60% threshold and pass on the next ballot. These people are not burning books
For a comparison, the referendum to legalize marijuana for recreational use got 55.9% of the vote. These people are not burning books either unless they run out of rolling papers and are too stoned to drive.
The second biggest problem in Florida are the traffic problems but that is a topic for another blog thread.
I hope my diatribe with accompanying typos answered your question.
Brilliant
I like it, a lot.
@Richard,
Getting a “brilliant” from you is quite the compliment.
I will wear it close to my heart as Englishman would wear their OBE and Margaret Thatcher wore her Order of Merit!
Cheers!
🙂
You are a flatterer.
@Bay Tampa Bay
Thank you for your extensive, thorough and entertaining reply to my query.
As usual with US politics and this type of issue it’s well worth taking ten minutes to watch MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell https://www.msnbc.com/the-last-word/watch/lawrence-republican-senators-say-hell-no-to-musk-and-trump-225171525623
I strongly suspect O’Donnell will be one of the first MSNBC presenters that Trump and his crew go after following Trump taking office on 20th January, as O’Donnell was anti Trump long before his first run for President. And if Trump’s successful in that expect Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes and Joyce Reid to ‘get got’ thereafter, and ultimately MSNBC taken off air. It’s happened in Russia so we can assume Putin’s given Trump plenty of advice on the topic – as with much else we’re witnessing.
Very good
Thanks
Lawrence O’Donnell is one of the best op-ed commentators in the US Media (all media) today
If that is the case , the UK is too ,
