It was beautiful at the Wetlands and Wildlife Trust's Welney reserve this morning. This is the bridge over the Fenland 'drains' (or drainage canals) onto the reserve:
The reserve was looking good, with water levels much down from those of only a few weeks ago:
Highlights were marsh harrier, godwits, kingfisher, snipe, dunlin, cattle and great egret and many more.
The sky was playing tricks, though. That gave me the chance to take some photos of skeins of Canada geese. First was this:
Then, a little later, I saw another coming over and shot straight into the sun, not knowing what might come out:
I am sure if I learned to use Lightshop, these could be improved no end, but I like them anyway. These were taken on an iPhone.

Wonderful pictures of the birds. More Please!
In the latest online news, per US publication, “The Onion”: English Water Buffalos have formed a Political Action Committee and are DEMANDING equal representation on the “Funding the Future” blog.
There are none at Welney and the birds aren’t good at the site where they are right now – a seasonal issue – but the mud is, which is good for the buffalo and bad for me
Kemi Badenoch’s probably putting you down as a “wet” after your musings earlier. Glad you posted on your wetland excursion. The geese pics have an eerie quality to them, truer for being un-lightshoped. (Have you any buffalo shots? They cheer me up somedays.)
Call that a skein?
One of the blessings of living here is the proximity of the Montrose Basin where wildfowl are abundant. We have skeins of many hundreds overhead when the geese are on the move. It’s a joyous sight even to a non-birder like myself.
🙂
Surprisingly even down here on the edge of London we regularly see pretty large skeins commuting in and out of town each day. I wonder if they could be heading into the Hammersmith wetlands for the day, then back to the reserviors around Walton in the evening. I am roughly in between the two, they make a quiet honking in flight, it’s always a nice distraction when I am up on a roof.
Thanks
Have you thought about playing with the in-camera phone photo processing software? It might help you get into the basics of post processing a little if there is any?
The lovely V formation on the lower picture – I would crop out the tree tops to emphasize the shape and look at the levels to bring a bit more detail in around the sun.
Your first picture should be B&W I think, looking at levels also to see if there is any detail in that sky – the strong shapes – on the right – being echoed on the left. Next time you are there, try that picture in horizontal/landscape format rather than portrait and see how it works.
When there is time I suspect I will, return to these two
I did wonder about black and white
And I deliberately left the trees in for context….
