I suddenly realised that posting about meeting wants and not needs on my birthday might leave me open to allegations of hypocrisy - on the assumption that some big present had come my way.
So, this was my wife's present to me this morning:
In fairness, I should add this 'extra':
I think it fair to say that she knows just what I like.
When she asked if I had bought myself anything as a treat, I admitted that I had:
I am not sure we're going to fuel growth with these, but that was never the point of life, in my opinion. And I will still be counting my blessings.

Last Xmas we decided as a family to try to buy all our presents secondhand, or give experiences (my daughter is a climate activist).
It worked out really well, and I’m now trying to buy everything I can secondhand, if possible from charity shops. You have to shop in a different way, because it’s harder to find exactly what you want when you want it. So you don’t ‘go shopping’ – you call in when passing recycling or charity shops and buy things when you see them – so it saves the energy/pollution you might also use if you made a special trip. Everybody wins!

I often buy second hand books – although I also like to support smaller publishers
And the unpredictability of second hand shopping is fun

When I turned 60 last year, I recalled that well-known quote from Henry David Thoreau:
“Simplify your life. Don’t waste the years struggling for unimportant things. Don’t burden yourself with possessions. Keep your needs and wants simple and enjoy what you have. Don’t destroy your peace of mind by looking back, and worrying about the past. Live in the present.”
