Sometime late yesterday evening this blog clicked up its 3,162,651st read of the year.
That makes this year the most successful in the blog's history in terms of numbers of reads.
The oddity is that this happened on 23 August, with more than a third of the year to go and with average current monthly reads easily exceeding 400,000 a month. It is possible that the total reads of this blog might exceed 5 million this year.
My thanks to all who come here and read or comment. The site is what it is because of you. It's been going a long time now (more than seventeen years). It's continued popularity is gratifying, I admit.

I’ve been reading this blog for well over 10 years now, finding it when I was looking for explanations for the GFC in 2008 and the economic aftermath, when, as a finance professional, the proposed Tory austerity remedies made no sense at all to me. I have learnt so much since then, and am very grateful for the continued daily insights of you and many of your regular contributors. I do my best to disseminate what I now know to others, hopefully at least making them also question the economic orthodoxies they get fed via the MSM, and refer people to this blog when appropriate. So thank you for all your work on this!

Am sure the Treasury, BoE, MPC, OBR must be among the millions sneaking a read – pity they cant bring themselves to engage.

I only found this blog fairly recently although I have heard Richard on the radio before. I find it a haven of sense and hope of stability in a world chaos and despair. I hope to live long enough to see another country like the one I knew when I was young. Best Wishes .

Before discovering your blog I would have firmly believed articles such as this one published 2 days ago on the BBC news website which continues to peddle the narrative that they can only spend what they get in via taxes… shouldn’t it read ‘The government destroys most of what it spends via taxes, which tend to be disproportionately levied on those on low to middle incomes. Whereas those on very high incomes tend to pay a much lower proportion of their income in taxes’?…..

The government gets most of its income from taxes. For example, workers pay income tax, everyone pays VAT on certain goods and companies pay tax on their profits.
It could, in theory, cover all of its spending from taxes, and in some years that happens.
But if it can’t, it needs to either raise taxes, cut spending or borrow.

That’s a big claim
One thing I have often wondered is when do you decide to stop comments on any particular blog? Is it after a certain number of comments, or number of days?
Five days is the limit.
That is largely to prevent me having to manage comments on posts years old. That would be impossible.
