I was aware yesterday that I was both approaching 100,000 Twitter followers and that the short thread I wrote yesterday was both proving popular and had added a couple of hundred or so followers when I saw an on-screen notification whilst watching The Last Leg that food and poverty campaigner Jack Monroe had liked several tweets in the thread.
Then the notifications of new followers began to flow in. By the time I went I bed I had 300 more followers and just now this was the situation:
So, my thanks to Jack, and those new followers. There is campaigning to be done, and Twitter is, for all its critics, a force for good in this way.

Ever considered studying for a doctorate to add to that impressive list?
I could apply for a doctorate on the basis of my existing academic publications
But, to be honest, why?
To study in an area which you find interesting, to learn from other academics, as well as the permanent title before your name.

I have all the opportunity to do the first two already as a research professor
The third really does not worry me

A UCL contemporary is about to retire as Professor of Law. He has two masters, each is different areas to his main discipline to assist his socio legal research interests. His publications are legion. He has no doctorate and has never considered applying for one. Those outside academe are unlikely to understand that doctorates simply become irrelevant if your career takes this sort of path, which is not at all uncommon. It is true that the conventional route for an academic career is first degree, doctorate, post doctoral research, chair, but that is all. There are many like Richard.
I am a Pracademic – someone who can definitely do academia, where my papers gave now won two prizes, but who brings real world training and professional qualification to the discipline rather than a PhD.
