Who said this?
No other Chancellor in the long history of the office has felt the need to pass a law in order to convince people that he has the political will to implement his own Budget. As one commentator observed this week, there are only two conclusions. Either the Chancellor has lost confidence in himself to stick to his resolution, and is, so to speak, asking the police to help him, or he fears that everyone else has lost confidence in his ability to keep his word, but hopes that they might believe in the statute book if not in him. Neither is much of a recommendation for the Chancellor of the day.

Great minds….
It’s just a gimmick because they lied about raising VAT last time. Any attempt to even draft such a bill would be impossible and they know it. The Tory campaign is pulling a new rabbit out of the hat every day for the Tory press to headline. But they still refuse to debate in public. I went to a hustings in Barnsley last night – every party standing was represented by its candidate except the Liberals who sent in a chap from the next door constituency and the Conservatives who sent only a short apology. Has Crosby gagged the whole sorry crew for the duration?
‘Keeping their word’?
Surely a contradiction in terms for that lot?
Maybe they want a law to try and prevent their friends getting a top rate tax hike should they lose power as a minority government. Not sure how it works but I would think it could be reversed anyway. Maybe tomorrow the Conservatives will make a promise to implement another new law to stop them repealing their promised new law stopping them from raising taxes?
