This is a fascinating quote from Beatrice Webb, she quoting Joseph Chamberlain:
‘My aim in life is to make life pleasanter for this great majority; I do not care if it becomes in the process less pleasant for the well to do minority.' (Joseph Chamberlian, 1836-1914).
It's a powerful interpretation of utilitarianism. And an appropriate one. But it's now forgotten.
But Birmingham, especially, had much to thank this man for.
