Unemployment hits highest since 1995 | Business | guardian.co.uk .

Unemployment has jumped to its highest level since mid-1995, pushing the jobless rate in Britain up to nearly 8%, official data showed today.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the jobless total on the broad International Labour Office measure rose by 210,000 in the three months to July, taking the total to 2.47 million.

Green shots?

Recovery?

And the promise from Tories, Labour and Lib Dems alike of massive cuts in government spending and enormous job cuts.

As I said earlier today, we are standing on the edge of a cliff.

Let's not for a minute pretend we're out of the woods.

Unemployment could rise to 4 million. I remain convinced of this.

And I hate the human cost of it.

Can't our politicians see this?

I know there will be tears before bed time. And they could be avoided. And that is a deep hurt to live with.
