Looking after the super-rich: Evan Davis has his doubts

Posted on

Evan Davis is the BBC's economics editor. He has his doubts about the UK basing its economy on serving the super-rich and becoming, as he puts it:

butler to the global super-rich.

Quite right too. So he should be worried, not least because if the EU does force us to scrap our domicile rules (on which he acknowledges this whole role is based) we'll be in trouble, As he puts it:

Is it secure as an economic base for the country - or will they up-sticks and move to Dubai if that offers a better deal?

All one can say is that you want to build your economy around servicing the business activities of the super-rich, you'd better have some super-rich around.

Of course the alternative is you could do something of real value, and they don't add a lot in that case.
