In the Christmas spirit of goodwill I thought I should mention what the Isle of Man is good for. Quite specifically, this:
That is something worth getting excited about.
Reproduced with the permission of David Lloyd-Jones and taken last weekend.

Lovely. But then any Welsh narrow gauge railway gives it a good run for its money.
Other than that, the Isle of Man is good at enabling people to kill and maim themselves on motorbikes.
But I have a particular soft spot for three foot gauge
Narrow gauge trains are one of my other passions in life
As if I needed to prove I was a geek
Ah! You’ll probably need to allow time to do the Caledonian Railway when you come to Brechin.
It’s not narrow gauge, but I guess it has some delights for the geek. (?) Not least a full size Thomas Tank Engine to engage the inner child. 🙂
Don’t forget the fabulous “Mindhorn”!

You must surely have read your boys the “Thomas the Tank Engine” stories when they were young enough to need to be read to?
I think I knew them off by heart
But I read rather more on railways than that
I have about 1,000 books on railways
OMG – books! You too!
I live under a pile of books….
“I live under a pile of books….”
How does that compare in economic terms with paying rent or mortgage.?
We should be told if this is a viable solution to the housing crisis.
Do you feel a blog coming on ? 🙂
No….
A few other things that come to mind
Lovely glens
Kippers
Queenies, scallops and general seafood
Real ales
Electric and horse trams
Excellent sport culture (running, walking cycling etc)
The finest Victorian theatre in the UK (probably)
Very low crime rate
Oh and I nearly forgot a top income tax rate of 20%
But the last only possible because it is massively subisidised by the UK still
But IO will be doing more on that in 2018, I promise
The research is done….
Industrial history. Laxey Wheel is impressive.
As you said: stunning.
As are the several other ‘local’ supported railways and their volunteer maintainers.
IOM is good for being the IOM just as England is good for being England ???
Oh alright then Craig.
But just because its Christmas – OK?
Orwell might point out of the IOM
Two legs good, three legs better ?
But you imply it is better to let the train take the strain?
