{"id":9944,"date":"2011-05-10T08:15:34","date_gmt":"2011-05-10T07:15:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=9944"},"modified":"2011-05-10T08:15:53","modified_gmt":"2011-05-10T07:15:53","slug":"when-will-the-public-realise-that-this-government-is-only-serving-an-elite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2011\/05\/10\/when-will-the-public-realise-that-this-government-is-only-serving-an-elite\/","title":{"rendered":"When will the public realise that this government is only serving an elite?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/education\/2011\/may\/09\/universities-extra-places-richest-students\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Teenagers from the wealthiest families would be able to pay for extra places at the most competitive universities under government proposals that could allow institutions to charge some British\u00a0students the same high fees as overseas undergraduates.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates who take up the extra places would not be eligible for publicly funded loans to pay\u00a0tuition fees or living costs, limiting this option to all but the most privileged households who could pay fees up front.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So access to education becomes ever more unequal. And some universities (St Andrew's, for example) become ever more like a rather nice finishing school.<\/p>\n<p>They have an excuse, of course.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ministers argue that the creation of extra places will boost social mobility by freeing up more publicly subsidised places for undergraduates from poorer homes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>And it doesn't stack, of course:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the proposals are likely to be criticised as a means for the wealthiest to \"buy places\" at a time when the government is to cut 10,000 publicly funded places.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It still amazes me that the public have not got what this\u00a0government\u00a0is about,\u00a0although\u00a0equally I concede that it's true that they have not.
