{"id":9827,"date":"2011-05-01T18:52:03","date_gmt":"2011-05-01T17:52:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=9827"},"modified":"2011-05-01T18:52:03","modified_gmt":"2011-05-01T17:52:03","slug":"the-us-needs-to-tell-switzerland-precisely-where-it-can-shove-its-proposed-tax-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2011\/05\/01\/the-us-needs-to-tell-switzerland-precisely-where-it-can-shove-its-proposed-tax-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"The US needs to tell switzerland precisely where it can shove its proposed tax deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Switzerland seems to never give up in its\u00a0pursuit\u00a0of\u00a0abuse - and in its ability to deliver misinformation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/politics\/Tax_at_source_proposed_for_US_account_holders.html?cid=30124610\" target=\"_blank\">Swissinfo has reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland has proposed it impose a final tax at the source on money held by US citizens in Swiss banks, according to Finance Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So the Swiss are offering the US <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2011\/04\/26\/the-uk-switzerland-tax-agreement-a-grubby-little-arrangement\/\" target=\"_blank\">the same grubby little\u00a0arrangement <\/a>they have offered to the UK, and which we have been daft enough to accept.<\/p>\n<p>What's wrong with it? Well let's try this:<\/p>\n<p>a) The names of the epople involved aren't know, so tax evasion is encouraged.<\/p>\n<p>b) The capital remains wholly hidden from vuew - and if it was accumnulated due to tax evasiuon, that will always remain the case. That exonaterates past crimes.<\/p>\n<p>c) It\u00a0outsources\u00a0tax collection to a country\u00a0dedicated\u00a0to\u00a0promoting\u00a0tax crime, becasue that's what Switaerland is. If it wasn't it wouldn't be promoting this arrangemnt.<\/p>\n<p>My only encouragement is that the same report says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Widmer-Schlumpf said negotiations with the US for a tax at the source had not yet begun.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let's hope the US has the sense to tell the Swiss what they can do with this offer. The suitable respone is short, direct and and decidedly unambiguous.<\/p>\n<p>So why didn't the UK deliver it?<\/p>\n<p>Should we conclude the UK isn't interested in collecting tax from those really rather 'nice' evaders who use\u00a0Switzerland\u00a0and would rather concentrate on he likes of gas fitters - it's\u00a0current\u00a0focus of attention. It\u00a0certainly\u00a0looks that way.
