The rise of platforms like eBay and Vinted has stripped charity shops of their most profitable donated stock, as people facing squeezed living standards now sell their best items rather than donate them<\/span>, <\/span>cutting the supply that made these stores viable.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the major players<\/span>, like <\/span>Oxfam, the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK<\/span>, are <\/span>withdraw<\/span>ing<\/span> from the High Street, smaller charities will follow, and the multiplier effect will drag down the cafes, service businesses and footfall that remains.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Argument Structure<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 1 \u2014 Charity shops became the backbone of the post-retail High Street: <\/span><\/p>\n

But the consequence is that charity shops are left with lower-value stock, reduced margins and an inability to cover the costs of a High Street presence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 3 \u2014 The departure of anchor stores triggers a multiplier collapse: <\/span><\/p>\n

Major charity retailers<\/span>, like <\/span>Oxfam, British Heart Foundation, <\/span>and <\/span>Cancer Research UK<\/span>,<\/span> are not just shops; they are the anchors that generate the footfall other High Street businesses depend on. When people stop browsing the charity shop, they also stop buying coffee, visiting the barber or using other services nearby. One closure sets off a chain of further closures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 4 \u2014 The response must be reimagination, not replacement: <\/span><\/p>\n

Planning policy that permits only like-for-like retail replacement will produce only more vape shops and barbers<\/span>, which are<\/span> uses that cannot themselves generate sufficient footfall to revive a declining centre. What is needed is a political decision to reimagine High Street units as housing, leisure, and above all genuine community or third spaces: places where people can gather, volunteer and live without being required to spend money they do not have.<\/span><\/p>\n
