The Core Argument<\/span><\/p>\n

A US player received a red card and an automatic suspension during the World Cup. Donald Trump objected to the decision and asked FIFA to review it, and FIFA lifted the suspension, something that had not happened at a World Cup since 1962.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether the original decision was right or wrong is not the point. Every sport, like every institution, depends on rules being applied equally and on the final decision of the relevant authority being upheld, or the whole contest is discredited.<\/span><\/p>\n

The same principle underpins democracies. Courts apply the law, regulators enforce standards and officials act independently precisely because trust depends on equal treatment, and that trust is what makes any system worth participating in.<\/span><\/p>\n

This episode fits a wider pattern in which courts, regulators and election officials in both the USA and the UK have come under pressure to serve <\/span>powerful individuals rather than apply agreed rules impartially, and football has now illustrated <\/span>exactly the same<\/span> problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Argument Structure<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 1 \u2014 What <\/span>actually happened<\/span>: <\/span><\/p>\n

A US player received a red card and the automatic suspension that follows from it. Donald Trump said the decision was unfair and asked FIFA to review it. FIFA allowed the suspension to be lifted, the first time this had happened at a World Cup since 1962, and the player became eligible to play again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 2 \u2014 The football outcome is not the issue: <\/span><\/p>\n

The USA went on to lose their next match four one to Belgium, so the intervention changed nothing about the result. That is beside the point. The controversy is about the intervention itself, not about how the USA performed afterwards.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 3 \u2014 Why equal application of rules matters: <\/span><\/p>\n

Every game depends on agreed rules that players accept before they compete and that referees apply to everyone without favour. Referees make mistakes, and that is accepted as part of the game, but no competitor should receive special treatment because of who they are or who they know. Without that principle there is no fair contest in any sport, and society works on <\/span>exactly the same<\/span> basis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 4 \u2014 The wider institutional pattern: <\/span><\/p>\n

Democracies depend on the same principle. Courts apply the law, regulators enforce standards, and officials are expected to act independently, because trust depends on equal treatment for everyone. Pressure has already been placed on courts in the USA and the UK, on regulators, and on election officials in the USA. If powerful people can rewrite outcomes because of who they are, confidence in the whole system is eroded, and that confidence is far harder to rebuild than it is to destroy.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was just a football decision, and Trump was entitled to say he thought the red card was wrong, like any fan would.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

Plenty of fans think referees get decisions wrong, and that is a normal part of sport. What happened here was different in kind, not degree. A serving head of state used his access to a governing body to have a competition rule set aside for one player, and that governing body agreed, for the first time at a World Cup since 1962.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is not fan commentary. It is influence being used to bypass a process that everyone else <\/span>has to<\/span> accept without complaint.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

FIFA made an independent decision on review, so this was due process working properly, not favouritism.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

Due process exists to be applied consistently to everyone under the same rules, not selectively when a powerful individual asks for a review. The relevant question is not whether FIFA followed some internal procedure, but whether an ordinary player or federation without that level of access could have achieved the same outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n

FIFA had already gone out of its way to court Trump, which is exactly the kind of relationship that makes a review look like a favour rather than a neutral process.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

The USA lost anyway, so nothing was really changed and no harm was done.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

The footballing outcome was never the point. The USA did indeed lose their next match four one to Belgium, so the intervention changed nothing about the result on the pitch.<\/span><\/p>\n

The damage is to trust in the process itself. Once it is established that a suspension can be lifted because a powerful person asked, every future decision by that body becomes open to the same suspicion, regardless of how any <\/span>particular match<\/span> turns out.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

This is a trivial sporting story and reading wider political lessons into it is overblown.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

Football is used here as an illustration precisely because the principle is so easy to see clearly in a sporting context, where the rules are simple and widely understood.<\/span><\/p>\n

The same dynamic, in which access and influence let the powerful bypass rules that bind everyone else, has already been visible in pressure placed on courts in the USA and the UK, on regulators, and on election officials in the USA. Seeing it play out in football makes the pattern harder to dismiss, not easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
