{"id":91713,"date":"2026-04-17T08:02:46","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T07:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=91713"},"modified":"2026-04-17T08:02:46","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T07:02:46","slug":"if-it-take-trump-to-move-reeves-on-electricity-pricing-what-chance-of-further-reform-is-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2026\/04\/17\/if-it-take-trump-to-move-reeves-on-electricity-pricing-what-chance-of-further-reform-is-there\/","title":{"rendered":"If it take Trump to move Reeves on electricity pricing, what chance of further reform is there?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been writing for years about the pernicious impact of the way in which UK electricity prices are set, based as they are on a totally flawed economic theory that bears no relationship to reality, and which results in us paying for electricity as if it were all produced from natural gas when much of it is generated in cheaper ways.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2adcdded-778d-4197-9462-edfe769861a1?shareType=nongift&amp;syn-25a6b1a6=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the FT has reported that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rachel Reeves has said she wants to cut the link between electricity and gas prices in the UK as the government seeks to reduce its exposure to volatile fossil-fuel costs.<\/p>\n<p>The chancellor said that she and Ed Miliband, the energy secretary, would set out more details within days on ways of ensuring the wholesale price of electricity is set more often by renewables, reviving a thorny issue that has been subject to exhaustive review in recent years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So it takes Trump to bomb Iran to get an abusive form of state regulation of prices in the UK to be changed?
