{"id":91026,"date":"2026-03-19T08:37:37","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T08:37:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=91026"},"modified":"2026-03-19T08:37:37","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T08:37:37","slug":"mmt-in-the-guardian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2026\/03\/19\/mmt-in-the-guardian\/","title":{"rendered":"MMT in the Guardian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am aware that Heather Stewart's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/mar\/18\/zack-polanski-greens-economic-policy-reeves-taxes-labour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article in the Guardian<\/a>, in response to Zack Polanski's speech yesterday, has grossly misrepresented modern monetary theory.<\/p>\n<p>She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But Polanski called for a much more radical approach \u2013 of scrapping the OBR altogether in favour of what he called \u201cfiscal referees\u201d, who would give a general ruling on whether the government\u2019s plans looked sustainable, rather than a pass or fail against narrowly drawn rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">That would be a significant shift, and might cause market anxiety, but steers well short of modern monetary theory, which Polanski has previously been accused of flirting with, and which suggests governments can simply print money.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Apart from Heather Stewart clearly misinterpreting the speech by conflating these two issues, she is also grossly wrong in her representation of MMT. I have sent a letter to the Guardian this morning pointing this out.<\/p>\n<p>There is, of course, no guarantee that the Guardian will publish my letter. Others may wish to join in.
