{"id":90220,"date":"2026-02-19T07:07:02","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T07:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=90220"},"modified":"2026-02-19T07:07:02","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T07:07:02","slug":"the-flag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2026\/02\/19\/the-flag\/","title":{"rendered":"The Flag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Commentator David Lucas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2026\/02\/18\/first-they-came-for-the-intellectuals\/#comment-1068356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offered this doggerel here yesterday<\/a> in response to my comments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2026\/02\/18\/first-they-came-for-the-intellectuals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Rupert Lowe and education. <\/a>I thought it worth sharing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE FLAG<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are told the Union flag should make us proud<br \/>\nBut, our history was sometimes under a cloud<br \/>\nGermany has been made to acknowledged the Holocaust, and their children learn about its evil history<br \/>\nOur citizens should see our evil past, it\u2019s not a mystery.<\/p>\n<p>African slaves to America<br \/>\nSugar slave plantations in Jamaica<br \/>\nRiches plundered from India<br \/>\nOpium to China<br \/>\nMassacre in Amritsar<br \/>\nTorture in Kenya<\/p>\n<p>Starvation in Ireland left humanity shocked<br \/>\nFamine in Bengal that could have been stopped<br \/>\nOn and on the bad administration went<br \/>\nIs it a wonder good people make vent?<br \/>\nThe rich made very much richer<br \/>\nActing as the divine predator<br \/>\nColston, Clive, Drax and Rhodes made rich<br \/>\nDoes it surprise, there are statues to ditch?<br \/>\nShould our memory of Empire be celebrated?<br \/>\nOr should our ancestor\u2019s misdeeds be berated?<\/p>\n<p>The imperial influence has been worldwide<br \/>\nThe good and evil we should never hide<br \/>\nChartist radical, Ernest Jones, said, and it is not denied<br \/>\n(on the Empire)<br \/>\n\u201cThe sun never sets, and the blood never dried.\u201d<br \/>\nSo when the butchers apron flies, should we have pride?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commentator David Lucas offered this doggerel here yesterday in response to my comments on Rupert Lowe and education.
