{"id":89174,"date":"2026-01-14T12:31:03","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T12:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=89174"},"modified":"2026-01-14T12:31:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T12:31:03","slug":"is-it-time-for-england-to-go-out-on-its-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2026\/01\/14\/is-it-time-for-england-to-go-out-on-its-own\/","title":{"rendered":"Is it time for England to go out on its own?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We put <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/sUCWvECl1SM?si=gVeCek_BqfILzAX5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">out this video<\/a> this lunchtime:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Can the UK Survive?\" width=\"422\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sUCWvECl1SM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This is the transcript:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Latest opinion polls are showing that in both Scotland and Wales, there's a very high chance that pro-independence parties will form the next governments after elections in May 2026.<\/p>\n<p>In Scotland, against all expectations, the SNP is riding high, and with the Greens in that country, they will almost certainly be its next government.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true in Wales, where Plaid Cymru is doing better than it has ever done before in polls in that country, right at the top of the opinion poll and looking as though, again, with Green support, it could form the next administration in that country.<\/p>\n<p>Add in Northern Ireland, where Sinn F\u00e9in are, of course, in charge and likely to remain.<\/p>\n<p>So we face the prospect that right across the UK, three of the four countries that make up this supposed United Kingdom will, after May 2026, be governed by parties who wish to leave the Union.<\/p>\n<p>What does that say about the future of the UK?<\/p>\n<p>What does it say about the future of England?<\/p>\n<p>Is it time that England came to terms with the fact that the countries that it now governs from Westminster don't want to be there?
