{"id":88431,"date":"2025-12-14T08:05:24","date_gmt":"2025-12-14T08:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=88431"},"modified":"2025-12-14T08:05:24","modified_gmt":"2025-12-14T08:05:24","slug":"the-changing-political-landscpe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2025\/12\/14\/the-changing-political-landscpe\/","title":{"rendered":"The changing political landscpe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/138527be-266a-40a2-b8f5-6d0eae7072a6?shareType=nongift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FT has reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Labour party has lost about 100,000 members since last year\u2019s general election, underscoring the dramatic fall in Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s popularity and the surge in support for smaller parties.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The governing party\u2019s membership now stands below 250,000, meaning that Nigel Farage\u2019s Reform UK has overtaken Labour to become the largest political party in the UK, with 268,631 members, according to Reform\u2019s website.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They also noted, way down in the article, that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Green party\u2019s membership has risen from 126,000 to 180,000 since October.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The figures do not prove voting intentions, of course. They do, however, appear to replicate the findings of opinion polls, though.\u00a0 They also give clear indications of directions of travel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Labour is declining<\/li>\n<li>Reform is plateauing.<\/li>\n<li>The Greens are rising fast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To pretend that change is not on the political agenda would be absurd, especially when it is also noted that the Tories have at most 120,000 members.<\/p>\n<p>The questions are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Will Labour notice what is happening?<\/li>\n<li>Will they axe Syarmer?<\/li>\n<li>Has Farage peaked too soon?<\/li>\n<li>Can change be in the right direction for those who support a politics of care?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I am sure you can add more questions to that list. What is clear, however long it is, is that times are changing.
