{"id":86486,"date":"2025-10-06T08:10:58","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T07:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=86486"},"modified":"2025-10-06T08:10:58","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T07:10:58","slug":"how-long-is-it-before-promoting-scottish-welsh-and-irish-independence-is-deemed-to-be-a-terrorist-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2025\/10\/06\/how-long-is-it-before-promoting-scottish-welsh-and-irish-independence-is-deemed-to-be-a-terrorist-action\/","title":{"rendered":"How long is it before promoting Scottish, Welsh and Irish independence is deemed to be a terrorist action?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I note in my column in The National this morning (and I have edited the opening, very slightly), in the light of recent moves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2025\/10\/03\/the-us-is-now-a-fascist-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by Trump<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2025\/10\/06\/the-government-should-stop-wasting-time-on-gesture-politics-and-deliver-evenhandedness-instead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK government<\/a> on definitions of terrorism:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is now quite reasonable to ask how long it will be before supporting independence becomes a terrorist offence. After all, note that Trump has deemed supporting the overthrow of the US government a thing, and seeking to break the Union within the UK could obviously be considered in the same category if his move were copied here, as I think is likely.<\/p>\n<p>Where the US goes, the UK has a horrible habit of following. Worse, Labour, Reform and the\u00a0Tories\u00a0seem determined on that course of action and all align themselves with Trump in supporting Israel, however heinous its genocide. If there is one thing we know, it is that fascists do what they say they will.<\/p>\n<p>How will Scotland react to such a situation? That has to be the question for everyone in the country now. Scotland\u2019s freedom to choose is at risk. Many in the country might be deemed to be terrorists before too long. Those who might enact such laws have already given you due warning. Now, what is to be done about it?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I raise the question in all seriousness. How long will it be before, like Trump, the UK government declares the desire for independence and an \"anti-UK\" position, and therefore a terrorist cause?
