{"id":86103,"date":"2025-09-23T08:30:56","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T07:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=86103"},"modified":"2025-09-23T08:30:56","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T07:30:56","slug":"what-does-the-politics-of-care-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2025\/09\/23\/what-does-the-politics-of-care-mean\/","title":{"rendered":"What does the politics of care mean?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year, I was approached by a major publisher - a division of Penguin Random House - and asked to consider writing a book for them.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote a quite extensive proposal which described what I called the politics of care, about which I have already written this morning in the context of Donald Trump\u2018s acknowledgement that much of his behaviour is driven by hate.<\/p>\n<p>When working on that idea, I became interested in the possibility of care not just being a word, but also a mnemonic potentially representing a whole range of ideas, using the letters CARE to explore how such thinking could be used to examine just what the term 'care' might mean.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, I came up with seven mnemonics for care, although I never determined which one should be used above all else.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m interested in what readers here might think, and I will be asking using four polls, which are at the bottom of this post, and I am genuinely interested in the answers if you are willing to participate in this.<\/p>\n<p>My thinking suggested the C might stand for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cooperation:<\/strong> politics grounded in working together rather than in competition<\/li>\n<li><strong>Care<\/strong>: recognising human and ecological needs as central<\/li>\n<li><strong>Community<\/strong>: valuing collective belonging over individual goals<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connection<\/strong>: recognising interdependence among people and with nature<\/li>\n<li><strong>Common good<\/strong>: prioritising what benefits all rather than the few<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compassion<\/strong>: treating all with dignity and kindness<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creativity<\/strong>: imagining new solutions beyond existing orthodoxies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Similarly, I came up with this list using the letter A (which was the hardest to do):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Accountability<\/strong>: power must be answerable to people and communities<\/li>\n<li><strong>Action<\/strong>: turning principles into practice<\/li>\n<li><strong>Access<\/strong>: ensuring everyone has the essentials of life<\/li>\n<li><strong>Agency<\/strong>: enabling people to shape their own futures<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aspiration<\/strong>: creating hope and vision for better futures<\/li>\n<li><strong>Authenticity<\/strong>: acting with honesty and integrity in politics<\/li>\n<li><strong>Autonomy<\/strong>: protecting freedom of thought and action<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then I compiled the following possible meanings suggested by the letter R:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Renewal<\/strong>: institutions and society should be continually refreshed to meet real needs<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restoration<\/strong>: repairing what exploitation and neglect have damaged<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resilience:<\/strong> building strength to withstand social and ecological shocks<\/li>\n<li><strong>Redistribution:<\/strong> sharing resources fairly to tackle inequality<\/li>\n<li><strong>Responsibility<\/strong>: taking collective duty for one another seriously<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reciprocity<\/strong>: mutual respect and obligation in social life<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regeneration:<\/strong> renewing society and nature for future generations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, I came up with this list of ideas that the letter E could represent:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Equity<\/strong>: fair outcomes across income, gender, race, and generation<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empathy<\/strong>: grounding decisions in understanding and compassion<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ecology<\/strong>: placing planetary health at the heart of policy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empowerment<\/strong>: giving voice and capacity to those excluded<\/li>\n<li><strong>Earth<\/strong>: keeping the planet central to every choice<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engagement<\/strong>: encouraging participation and shared decision-making<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enjoyment:<\/strong> valuing joy, culture, and fulfilment as political goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I reckoned that by the time I had got this far, I had pushed the idea sufficiently to think that, amongst these options, the most useful might be found.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I did realise that putting these together in different ways might result in different spins being put on the various combinations that might make up the mnemonic CARE.\u00a0 Although I gave this a bit of thought, I will not pursue that further, here and now. Instead, might I ask that you think about which of these terms you prefer? In each of the four polls, you can use a maximum of three votes.
