{"id":83916,"date":"2025-07-12T08:01:38","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T07:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=83916"},"modified":"2025-07-12T08:01:38","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T07:01:38","slug":"why-are-labour-mps-so-complacent-about-genocide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2025\/07\/12\/why-are-labour-mps-so-complacent-about-genocide\/","title":{"rendered":"Why are Labour MPs so complacent about genocide?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/jul\/12\/labour-mps-call-uk-immediately-recognise-palestinian-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardian has noted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Nearly 60 Labour MPs have demanded the UK immediately recognises Palestine as a state, after Israel\u2019s defence minister\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jul\/07\/israeli-minister-reveals-plan-to-force-population-of-gaza-into-camp-on-ruins-of-rafah\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">announced plans<\/a>\u00a0to force all residents of Gaza into a camp on the ruins of Rafah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The MPs, who include centrist and leftwing backbenchers, sent a letter to David Lammy on Thursday warning they believed\u00a0Gaza\u00a0was being ethnically cleansed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are three questions.<\/p>\n<p>First, why has it taken so long?<\/p>\n<p>Second, why only 60? Are the rest happy with what is happening in Gaza?<\/p>\n<p>Third, why is Labour's right wing so complacent about genocide? Does ethnic cleansing not matter to them, or would they rather not associate with those who are 'left wing'?<\/p>\n<p>Opinion polls make it clear where the country is on this issue.
