Over the last few weeks, a recurring theme has emerged within my writing and YouTube videos, which is a reference to something I have been calling a politics of care.<\/p>\n
I have been sketching out what this might mean in odd moments, and have discussed it with my wife and sons, both of whom were around over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Last night I asked two of them, over our evening meal, whether I should write a book on this theme. They said I should, despite knowing that I am not always the most fun to live with when I am writing a book.<\/p>\n
The best day of writing a book is the day you agree with a publisher to do so.<\/p>\n
The next best day is when the publisher says it has gone to print.<\/p>\n
The bit between those two events can be tough going.<\/p>\n
Publication is harrowing because you have no idea how it will be received.<\/p>\n
Thereafter, you hope to be known for a while as the author of whatever it might be called.<\/p>\n
With that thought still in mind, I checked my emails while watching the early evening news programmes and was a little surprised to find a completely unsolicited invitation from a major publisher to write for them, or at least to discuss doing so.<\/p>\n
I have resisted this idea for some time. Over the last few weeks, I have begun to change my thinking for three reasons.<\/p>\n
First, I know we need a form of political economy. What we have is failing us.<\/p>\n
Second, we have to stand up to fascism, and that requires new thinking.<\/p>\n
Third, my sketching has been productive, although it is not complete yet. With a comprehensive plan, I do not find writing a book that hard, and I suspect I would find the exercise easier this time. I have written at least a million words a year since finishing my last book. Practice at anything, from forming sentences onwards, does help.<\/p>\n
So, I have this question:<\/p>\n
