{"id":80127,"date":"2025-02-11T15:13:55","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T15:13:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=80127"},"modified":"2025-02-11T15:13:55","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T15:13:55","slug":"an-unholy-alliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2025\/02\/11\/an-unholy-alliance\/","title":{"rendered":"An unholy alliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2025\/feb\/11\/us-uk-paris-ai-summit-artificial-intelligence-declaration?s=03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardian<\/a> has reported today:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The US and the UK have refused to sign the Paris AI summit\u2019s declaration on \u201cinclusive and sustainable\u201d artificial intelligence, in a blow to hopes for a concerted approach to developing and regulating the technology.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The two countries did not immediately explain their reasons for not adding their names to a document backed by 60 signatories on Tuesday, including\u00a0China, India, Japan, Australia and Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The UK prime minister\u2019s official spokesperson said France was one of the UK\u2019s closest partners in AI, but the government would \u201conly ever sign up to initiatives that are in UK national interests\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is hard to avoid three thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>The first is that Starmer was pandering to Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The second is that sustainability is not now seen as being in the UK's national interests.<\/p>\n<p>The third is that Starjmer, like Trump, thinks that national growth is going to be based on non-cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>Is there an unholy and potentially deeply harmful alliance developing between the UK and the USA?
