{"id":80084,"date":"2025-02-09T07:25:06","date_gmt":"2025-02-09T07:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=80084"},"modified":"2025-02-09T07:25:06","modified_gmt":"2025-02-09T07:25:06","slug":"the-eus-far-right-are-as-dangerous-as-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2025\/02\/09\/the-eus-far-right-are-as-dangerous-as-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"The EU&#8217;s far right are as dangerous as Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ffb098ed-60da-4015-b58d-543941c30e1b?shareType=nongift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FT has noted<\/a> this morning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Europe\u2019s emboldened far-right leaders lauded the impact of US President Donald Trump\u2019s tumultuous first weeks back in power as they declared the EU must replicate his policies to safeguard its future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At a \u201cMake Europe Great Again\u201d rally in Madrid on Saturday, leaders including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n and Italy\u2019s deputy premier Matteo Salvini declared that Trump\u2019s policies on fossil fuels, immigration and gender validated their prescriptions for the EU.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interestingly, Farage was not there. There is no suggestion that Reform was represented.<\/p>\n<p>The mode was, however, as ugly as might be expected:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Geert Wilders of the Netherlands\u2019 Freedom party said: \u201cWe refuse to bend our knee to the extremist agenda of the woke left. And we refuse to surrender to the guilt tripping of multiculturalism.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, racism and hate were on the agenda.<\/p>\n<p>What was not, apparently, mentioned were tariffs or Gaza. I suspect demands to make Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal parts of the USA were also conveniently ignored. Client politicians are not good at criticising their puppeteers.<\/p>\n<p>What is apparent are three things. The first is that the European far right is intent on delivering the same destruction that Trump is.<\/p>\n<p>The second is that fear and intimidation will also be their weapons of choice.<\/p>\n<p>Third, at least we can use Trump to point out the dangers of this.<\/p>\n<p>I could add that there is little comfort in any of this.
