{"id":79810,"date":"2025-01-26T08:46:37","date_gmt":"2025-01-26T08:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=79810"},"modified":"2025-01-26T08:46:37","modified_gmt":"2025-01-26T08:46:37","slug":"trump-is-serious-he-wants-greenland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2025\/01\/26\/trump-is-serious-he-wants-greenland\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump is serious: he wants Greenland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"dcr-1fnjjtg\" data-gu-name=\"headline\">\n<div class=\"dcr-14emo0l\">\n<div class=\"dcr-cohhs3\">\n<p class=\"dcr-u0152o\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jan\/25\/trump-greenland-denmark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Guardian<\/a> and others have reported:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-u0152o\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Donald Trump had a fiery phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen over his demands to buy Greenland, according to senior European officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-1cxruqk\" data-gu-name=\"body\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1a4fred\">\n<div id=\"maincontent\" class=\"dcr-1bwys2b\">\n<div class=\"article-body-commercial-selector article-body-viewer-selector dcr-1q6n3e0\">\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">As they note:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">Speaking to the Financial Times, officials said that Trump, then still president-elect, spoke with Frederiksen for 45 minutes last week, during which he was described to be aggressive and confrontational about Frederiksen\u2019s refusal to sell Greenland to the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">The Financial Times reports that according to five current and former senior European officials who were briefed on the call, the conversation \u201cwas horrendous\u201d. One person said: \u201cHe was very firm. It was a cold shower. Before, it was hard to take it seriously. But I do think it is serious and potentially very dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"ad-slot-container \">\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--inline1\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--inline ad-slot--inline1 ad-slot--rendered\" data-link-name=\"ad slot inline1\" data-name=\"inline1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-label-show=\"true\" data-google-query-id=\"CKX2-MT5kosDFfhC9ggda7YQnQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/59666047\/theguardian.com\/world\/article\/ng_0__container__\" class=\"ad-slot__content\">They added:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-s3ycb2\">According to one former Danish official, the call was a \u201cvery tough conversation\u201d in which Trump \u201cthreatened specific measures against Denmark such as targeted tariffs\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Why note this? There are three reasons.<\/p>\n<p>First, the USA does not need Greenland. That it wants to take territory is old-style fascist aggression and nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>Second, although this demand is very obviously insane, Trump is very obviously intent on pursuing it.<\/p>\n<p>Third, the same madness is apparent in the whole programme now being unrolled by Trump.<\/p>\n<p>We wanted to believe that Project 2025 was not real. It is. Trump wants to deliver it.
