{"id":78675,"date":"2024-11-15T07:51:03","date_gmt":"2024-11-15T07:51:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=78675"},"modified":"2024-11-15T07:51:03","modified_gmt":"2024-11-15T07:51:03","slug":"naive-optimism-is-not-the-best-way-to-manage-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2024\/11\/15\/naive-optimism-is-not-the-best-way-to-manage-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"Naive optimism is not the best way to manage Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/mansion-house-2024-speech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last night\u2019s Mansion House Speech<\/a> by Rachel Reeves:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I will always do what is in our national interest\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 for our economy\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 for our businesses\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 and for the British people.<\/p>\n<p>That means free and open trade\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 especially with our most economically important partners.<\/p>\n<p>That includes the United States\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 our single most important destination for financial services trade\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 and there is so much potential for us to deepen our economic relationship on areas such as emerging technologies.<\/p>\n<p>I look forward to working closely with President-Elect Trump, and his team, to strengthen our relationship in the years ahead.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Naive optimism is not the best way of selling your policy to an audience that is well aware of the risks that Trump is currently threatening.<\/p>\n<p>If Reeves were to have made sense, she would have talked about the threat of tariffs and how she will manage it, but she did not. I am not sure her audience will have been massively comforted by her naivete.<\/p>\n<p>And she then went on to say we will never rejoin the EU.
