{"id":78453,"date":"2024-10-31T07:22:38","date_gmt":"2024-10-31T07:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=78453"},"modified":"2024-10-31T07:22:38","modified_gmt":"2024-10-31T07:22:38","slug":"what-did-not-happen-in-the-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2024\/10\/31\/what-did-not-happen-in-the-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"What did not happen in the Budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These things did not happen in the Budget:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Green investment or anything to tackle the effect of climate change<\/li>\n<li>A new economic settlement for the devolved administrations and regions of England<\/li>\n<li>Anything to save local authorities from bankruptcy<\/li>\n<li>Anything to save universities from insolvency<\/li>\n<li>Anything serious on social care<\/li>\n<li>Anything meaningful to end the delay in the delivery of justice in the UK<\/li>\n<li>Anything to redirect savings to social purpose<\/li>\n<li>Anything to end the massive subsidy of wealth in the UK via the tax system, and most especially via pension tax relief<\/li>\n<li>Anything to make sure higher-paid employees pay their fair national insurance contributions<\/li>\n<li>Measures to increase the rate of tax on investment income to compensate for the lack of national insurance on them<\/li>\n<li>Anything to fund Companies House to run a real company regulation system in this country to really beat fraud and tax abuse<\/li>\n<li>Moves to take HM Revenue &amp; Customs back into local communities<\/li>\n<li>Moves to reduce inheritance tax on smaller estates whilst seriously increasing it on larger ones so that this tax might really be progressive<\/li>\n<li>The equalisation of capital gains tax rates with income tax<\/li>\n<li>Real spending increases sufficient to make public services work - when even the NHS increase was only an effective inflation rate increase<\/li>\n<li>Anything significant on child poverty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I am sure there is more.
