{"id":74990,"date":"2024-04-11T06:40:07","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T05:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=74990"},"modified":"2024-04-11T06:40:07","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T05:40:07","slug":"the-guardian-agrees-labours-tax-problems-cant-be-solved-by-a-cosy-coterie-of-old-insiders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2024\/04\/11\/the-guardian-agrees-labours-tax-problems-cant-be-solved-by-a-cosy-coterie-of-old-insiders\/","title":{"rendered":"The Guardian agrees: Labour&#8217;s tax problems can\u2019t be solved by a cosy coterie of old insiders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This comment was posted on the blog overnight by long term occasional commentator Jonathan:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Interestingly, now the Guardian have discovered your Taxing Wealth Report it seems they have started reading this blog \u2013 and based tonight\u2019s editorial on this post.<\/p>\n<p>It will be interesting to see if this continues, and whether the Labour Party realise they need more credible advisors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I did, as a result, search out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2024\/apr\/10\/the-guardian-view-on-labour-and-the-tax-gap-a-5-billion-question-let-to-a-panel-of-insiders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guardian\u2019s editorial today<\/a>, which has this headline:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-74993\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_1388-550x187.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_1388-550x187.jpeg 550w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_1388-768x261.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_1388-1536x521.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_1388-600x204.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_1388.jpeg 1571w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><br \/>\nThe editorial does, I admit, raise a great many questions I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2024\/04\/10\/why-has-rachel-reeves-appointed-as-her-tax-adviser-a-person-who-has-said-that-ax-is-extortion-and-told-parliament-that-he-was-not-too-worried-about-small-businesses-not-paying-their-taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted here yesterday, <\/a>including about the suitability of both Edward Troup and Bill Dodwell to be appointed to Labour\u2019s new tax advisor panel, and Margaret Hodge\u2019s\u2019 past comments upon them.<\/p>\n<p>They also picked up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2024\/04\/10\/labour-is-outsourcing-policy-to-the-city-establishment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on my concerns<\/a> about the appointment of a panel of the supposedly great and good to advise on financial services related issues, which I reposted here yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, they suggested that a much broader basis for the recruitment of expertise should have been adopted by Labour, as I have said many times before.<\/p>\n<p>And the editorial appears to explicitly support the Taxing Wealth Report line on taxing income from high earnings and wealth more.<\/p>\n<p>So, just for the record, I had no idea that this was being written, and although I did speak to Guardian journalists yesterday, including about my concerns on the membership of this panel, I had no involvement in this editorial in any way, even though its alignment with my views is high. But, that said, I am not complaining.
