{"id":74539,"date":"2024-03-09T08:59:05","date_gmt":"2024-03-09T08:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=74539"},"modified":"2024-03-09T08:59:05","modified_gmt":"2024-03-09T08:59:05","slug":"no-wonder-so-many-politicians-hate-the-arts-in-all-their-forms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2024\/03\/09\/no-wonder-so-many-politicians-hate-the-arts-in-all-their-forms\/","title":{"rendered":"No wonder so many politicians hate the arts in all their forms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having waxed almost lyrical on the power of the written word in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2024\/03\/09\/the-yeats-sisters-a-magnificent-celebration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">another post<\/a> this morning on the power of writing, I am overdue to share this piece in a different medium from another creative friend, Mark Northfield:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ode to Ukraine - performed by Cherry Mint Koala (the anthems of Europe and Ukraine entwined)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E2j3PuRTlcI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As Mark said of this to me in an email:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">This one is a musically symbolic classical instrumental with a very obvious \u2018message\u2019, developed from one of my rough homemade piano recordings posted back in March 2022.<\/div>\n<div data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\"><\/div>\n<div data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">It's a more fully realised and properly recorded trio arrangement entwining the official anthem of Europe - Beethoven\u2019s \u2018Ode to Joy\u2019, of course - with the national anthem of Ukraine.<\/div>\n<div data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\"><\/div>\n<div data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">As the piece progresses, Russia\u2019s invasion (and Putin\u2019s imperial ambition) is noted with a brief use of Mussorgsky from \u2018The Great Gate of Kiev\u2019 movement of Pictures At An Exhibition. However, the two anthems resume with vigour and entwine once more with greater complexity, finishing the piece in defiance and determination.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-removefontsize=\"true\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Mark timed the release of this piece to mark the second anniversary of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. I am late in sharing it. I do so now, noting again the idea that a person possessed of a powerful idea and the means to express it has real power.
