There is an article in the Guardian<\/a> this morning under the headline:<\/p>\n

Labour scrapping \u00a328bn green pledge could leave UK colder, sicker and poorer<\/h2>\n

I spoke to Fiona Harvey, the Guardian's environment editor yesterday afternoon as she was preparing this article. She quotes me:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s economically illiterate [to scrap the spending pledge],\u201d said Richard Murphy, a professor of accounting at Sheffield University. \u201cAny person who has done the most basic undergraduate economics knows that you have to invest to get growth.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She also notes me saying:<\/p>\n

The public money would attract private sector investment, probably enough to triple the amount invested, and would quickly pay off in economic growth and lower bills, as well as increased tax revenues.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fiscal multiplier [by which public investment stimulates growth] is a reality,\u201d said Murphy. \u201cIt also generates income in tax revenues.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And I offered the conclusion to the piece:<\/p>\n

Without investment in a low-carbon future, the future is likely to be \u201cbleak, barren, hopeless and devastated\u201d, according to Murphy. \u201cThe scale of regret is going to be phenomenal.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
