{"id":73935,"date":"2024-01-29T08:04:20","date_gmt":"2024-01-29T08:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=73935"},"modified":"2024-01-29T08:04:20","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T08:04:20","slug":"labour-is-on-the-wrong-side-on-gaza-as-on-almost-everything-else","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2024\/01\/29\/labour-is-on-the-wrong-side-on-gaza-as-on-almost-everything-else\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour is on the wrong side on Gaza, as on almost everything else"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2024\/jan\/28\/labour-suspends-kate-osamor-over-gaza-comments-in-holocaust-message\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Guardian has reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-1lpi6p1\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/labour\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Labour<\/a>\u00a0MP Kate Osamor has had the whip suspended while she is investigated for saying Gaza should be remembered as a genocide on Holocaust Memorial Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1lpi6p1\">Osamor had distributed the message to her party members, saying Holocaust Memorial Day should be observed, but other genocides should also be remembered \u2013 listing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/israel-hamas-war\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Gaza<\/a>\u00a0as one of them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-1lpi6p1\">This is utterly absurd.<\/p>\n<p>Genocide is defined as the\u00a0<span class=\"AraNOb\">deliberate<\/span>\u00a0killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of\u00a0<span class=\"AraNOb\">destroying<\/span>\u00a0that nation or group.<\/p>\n<p>Using the pretext of utterly unacceptable 7 October Hamas attacks, in response to which Israel had the clear and certain right to defend itself, Netanyahu has launched a campaign of genocide with the intention - as his ministers and he have made clear - of eliminating Palestine, forcing the people of Gaza out of their territory and removing for good (in his opinion) the chance of a two-state solution.<\/p>\n<p>That is a genocide that is being pursued with wanton disregard for human life and the harm caused.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Kate Osamor was right to refer to it as such.<\/p>\n<p>And no one can say she was anti-Semitic for doing so. Pointing out that Israel has a fascist government that is pursuing genocide is not anti-Semitic: it is stating an observable fact.<\/p>\n<p>So what is Labour doing?<\/p>\n<p>As usual, it is in denial of the facts.<\/p>\n<p>It is, as ever, living in fear.<\/p>\n<p>And as a consequence, it is on the wrong side of public opinion.<\/p>\n<p>But that is what we should expect a party that is now Zionist and which has no regard for human beings or human rights to do, and that is what Labour is now.
