Which would you prefer if you wanted to tackle inequality?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Davos is full of calls for the super-rich to be taxed more. The Patriotic Millionaires are at it. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/jan\/17\/wealth-tax-super-rich-davos-abigail-disney-brian-cox-valerie-rockefeller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Guardian notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>More than 250 billionaires and millionaires are demanding that the political elite meeting for the World Economic Forum in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/davos\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Davos<\/a>\u00a0introduce wealth taxes to help pay for better public services around the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Guardian adds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A \u201cmodest\u201d 1.7% wealth tax on the richest 140,000 people in the UK could raise more than \u00a310bn to help pay for public services,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2023\/aug\/11\/modest-wealth-tax-could-raise-more-than-10bn-for-public-services-says-tuc\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the Trades Union Congress (TUC) suggested last year<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oxfam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/inequality\/2024\/jan\/15\/worlds-five-richest-men-double-their-money-as-poorest-get-poorer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is also making the demand<\/a>. Again, the Guardian notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Calling for a wealth tax to redress the balance between workers and super-rich company bosses and owners, [Oxfam's] report says such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2023\/may\/29\/2-tax-uk-rich-list-families-raise-22bn-year-reform-inequality\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a levy on British millionaires and billionaires<\/a>\u00a0could bring in \u00a322bn for the exchequer each year, if applied at a rate of between 1% to 2% on net wealth above \u00a310m.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I wish I did not have to disagree with the demands of these organisations, but I do.<\/p>\n<p>As I have shown in the Taxing Wealth Report 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2023\/12\/04\/why-we-do-not-need-a-wealth-tax-bit-need-to-tax-the-income-earned-from-wealth-a-great-deal-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wealth taxes are not only not required, but they really would be an impediment to progress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, even more pragmatically, if we want to tax wealth, there are so many much easier ways to do it that would encounter none of the massive organisational, logistical, accounting and ethical issues that a wealth tax would encounter.
