{"id":71935,"date":"2023-09-19T09:52:10","date_gmt":"2023-09-19T08:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=71935"},"modified":"2023-09-19T09:52:10","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T08:52:10","slug":"one-of-the-taxing-wealth-report-recommendations-could-solve-the-pay-problems-in-the-uks-care-home-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2023\/09\/19\/one-of-the-taxing-wealth-report-recommendations-could-solve-the-pay-problems-in-the-uks-care-home-system\/","title":{"rendered":"One of the Taxing Wealth Report recommendations could solve the pay problems in the UK&#8217;s care home system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2023\/sep\/19\/uk-care-home-bosses-demand-next-government-funds-44-pay-rise-for-staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted this in The Guardian<\/a> this morning:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">Care home bosses are demanding the next government funds a 44% pay rise for frontline staff to stabilise the crisis-hit sector and boost a system that is \u201cin an extremely precarious state\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">Care England, whose members include the largest care home chains, is calling for the next prime minister to set a \u00a315-per-hour minimum wage for care workers as part of a \u00a310bn a year support package.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I also noted this comment in the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-1kas69x\">Tax expert and campaigner Richard Murphy recently calculated that restricting pension tax relief to 20% would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2023\/09\/06\/ending-higher-rates-of-tax-relief-on-pension-contributions-would-raise-14-5-billion-in-tax-a-year\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">raise up to \u00a314.5bn a year<\/a>\u00a0- more than enough to stabalise social care.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is exactly why I am writing the Taxing Wealth Report 2024.
