Nothing could be further from the truth. The issue is real and ongoing. Let's have some facts. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RichardJMurphy\/status\/1685915776723881984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A thread<\/a>....<\/p>\n<p>The Financial Conduct Authority (the FCA) has responsibility for monitoring this issue. It issued a report on it earlier this year. Around one-fifth do. The rest would like the option.<\/p>\n<p>What is apparent is that people are not aware that large banks are legally obliged to offer basic bank accounts. These do not allow overdrafts. Those being refused have the following profile, with all the usual prejudices in society obviously present:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-71123\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.47.41-550x530.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.47.41-550x530.png 550w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.47.41-311x300.png 311w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.47.41-768x740.png 768w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.47.41-415x400.png 415w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.47.41.png 1426w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Credit facilities were by far the most likely product to be refused:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-71124\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.50.56-550x954.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.50.56-550x954.png 550w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.50.56-173x300.png 173w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.50.56-231x400.png 231w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.50.56.png 724w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, bank accounts were also refused:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-71126\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.53.19-550x190.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.53.19-550x190.png 550w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.53.19-768x265.png 768w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.53.19-600x207.png 600w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.53.19.png 1398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A staggering 16% of those who applied for a basic bank account were refused, double the rate for routine accounts.<\/p>\n<p>There were reasons for rejection, of course:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-71127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.55.46-550x829.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.55.46-550x829.png 550w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.55.46-199x300.png 199w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.55.46-265x400.png 265w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.55.46.png 754w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It would appear that potential political bias by the organisation to which the application was made is a very limited issue.<\/p>\n<p>There were much stronger reasons why people felt unbanked. One was because some (mainly older) people have a dependence on branch banking:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-71128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.04-550x308.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.04-550x308.png 550w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.04-536x300.png 536w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.04-768x430.png 768w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.04-600x336.png 600w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.04.png 1432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Too many of these people are being unbanked by the closure of their branches:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-71129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.20-550x534.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.20-550x534.png 550w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.20-309x300.png 309w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.20-412x400.png 412w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.20.png 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is also a massive problem with exclusion as a result of banks relying on digital access:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-71130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.51-550x287.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.51-550x287.png 550w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.51-768x401.png 768w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.51-600x313.png 600w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-07.59.51.png 1410w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is also a barrier to data on banking for the same reason:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-71131\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-08.00.24-550x295.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-08.00.24-550x295.png 550w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-08.00.24-768x412.png 768w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-08.00.24-600x321.png 600w, https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Screenshot-2023-07-31-at-08.00.24.png 1396w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, what to suggest?<\/p>\n<p>I think that there are three vital issues to note.<\/p>\n<p>The first is that if access to banking is now a social necessity (and I think it is), then the current situation of those unbanked is unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Second, it is apparent that the current behaviour of commercial banks is not addressing this issue.
