{"id":69469,"date":"2023-04-26T07:54:40","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T06:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=69469"},"modified":"2023-04-26T07:55:02","modified_gmt":"2023-04-26T06:55:02","slug":"the-nhs-in-england-is-not-being-allowed-to-recruit-new-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2023\/04\/26\/the-nhs-in-england-is-not-being-allowed-to-recruit-new-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"The NHS in England is not being allowed to recruit new staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsj.co.uk\/finance-and-efficiency\/deficit-trusts-face-intimidating-conversations-and-orders-to-hold-down-staffing\/7034689.article#.ZEfbyHul7yg.twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health Service Journal<\/a> reported yesterday that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>NHS England has told many trusts and systems they are not allowed to increase their staffing establishment in the next 12 months.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is quite extraordinary.<\/p>\n<p>The NHS is in crisis.<\/p>\n<p>There are massive waiting lists.<\/p>\n<p>There are at least 10% staff vacancies.<\/p>\n<p>Stress levels amongst those working for the NHS are through the roof.<\/p>\n<p>But the NHS is being told by the government not to recruit any more staff.<\/p>\n<p>It is as if the government does not want to sort problems in the NHS.<\/p>\n<p>One might almost think they want another major medical crisis within it, directly caused by understaffing.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s even plausible that ministers might be indifferent to the suffering of those in the NHS and amongst those it serves.<\/p>\n<p>And all this is because very obviously balancing the books is much more important than doing anything to help real people live their lives as well as possible.<\/p>\n<p>There are moments when swearing is virtually all we can do. But I will restarting myself. What the flip is going on here?
