At the moment this is a bit of a placeholder page, but it will not be in due course. Once the Tax Research Glossary is up and running with sufficient entries to make it useful the next issue that I intend to tackle is the myths that underpin neoliberalism.<\/p>\n<p>Without in any way seeking to be exclusive these might include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is money in the bank<\/li>\n<li>Banks lend out other people\u2019s money<\/li>\n<li>Tax pays for spending<\/li>\n<li>Government debt has to be repaid<\/li>\n<li>Growth is the be-all and end-all of the economy and nothing else matters<\/li>\n<li>Austerity is the right response to economic downturns<\/li>\n<li>Public services are black holes into which many is thrown<\/li>\n<li>Government spending can\u2019t add to growth<\/li>\n<li>Money creation is bound to lead to inflation<\/li>\n<li>The government must balance its books<\/li>\n<li>We can\u2019t afford pay rise during inflationary periods<\/li>\n<li>Profit is a measure of anything useful<\/li>\n<li>Government is like a household<\/li>\n<li>There is no such thing as society<\/li>\n<li>Our grandchildren will have to repay our debt<\/li>\n<li>The national debt is a burden<\/li>\n<li>We can no longer afford the NHS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Suggestions are welcome. Please email them to glossary@taxresearch.org.uk.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of this exercise will be to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explain what is being claimed<\/li>\n<li>Show why it is wrong<\/li>\n<li>Offer a counter-narrative that can be used to attack it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I am hoping this will prove to be useful.
