{"id":6405,"date":"2010-03-18T12:30:21","date_gmt":"2010-03-18T10:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/?p=6405"},"modified":"2010-03-18T12:30:21","modified_gmt":"2010-03-18T10:30:21","slug":"the-swiss-still-dream-of-flat-withholding-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2010\/03\/18\/the-swiss-still-dream-of-flat-withholding-taxes\/","title":{"rendered":"The Swiss still dream of flat withholding taxes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSLDE62E06X20100315\">CS sees withholding tax on Germans' accounts-paper | Reuters <\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters report that:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"focusParagraph\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The chief of Credit Suisse's  private bank is proposing a withholding tax on bank accounts held by Germans in Switzerland to help ease strained ties with Berlin, a newspaper reported on Monday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"relatedTopics\">I have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxresearch.org.uk\/Blog\/2010\/03\/17\/swiss-banking-demands-flat-taxes-for-the-world-at-rates-they-will-set\/\" target=\"_blank\">already discussed<\/a> the absurdity of this idea but the Swiss are clearly still hanging on to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"relatedTopics\">But what's really funny is the justification for it:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"relatedTopics\">Such a withholding tax could mean outflows in the short term but would not greatly harm his bank's fortunes, Walter Berchtold told Germany's Handelsblatt.<\/p>\n<p>\"Long-term I'm very optimistic, because our business doesn't rely on untaxed funds,\" he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well that must make it the only bank in Switzerland that doesn't since even Swiss officials seem happy to accept that half all money in the place is illicit.<\/p>\n<p>It really is time the Swiss accepted that those facilitating fraud don't set agendas and that the whole Swiss economy is structured for just that purpose.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CS sees withholding tax on Germans&#8217; accounts-paper | Reuters .
